Mir Castle catches your eye from afar. You stare at each of its red-tiled towers as if it’s the face of a friend you haven't seen for 10 years and ask just one question: "Are they the same or not?”
And still, the towers are different. There are five of them. Four in the corners. The fifth, in the middle of the western wall, faces the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilna.
Why are they different? The base of each tower is a quadrangle, and it ends in an octagon. But the change from four corners to eight for each tower is designed differently. Such an architectural concept makes the castle look dynamic.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, a mix of three styles of architecture: Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Its purpose is to defend. But the castle doesn't look threatening. It is rather charming as the majority of castles described on the pages of fairy tales. This is due to the color design: red bricks and light beige plaster.
You walk in the castle courtyard and forget that the 21st century is rules outside the walls. The sightseeing process is a bit of a quest. A special 'pleasure' is to climb the spiral staircases with extremely high steps. Two people can hardly pass each other there. The bonus, however, is the beautiful views from the narrow castle loopholes.
Legends. The castle air is full of them. About the Phantom Apple Orchard, the White Lady, a lamb's head... Then, though, it's a bit creepy to go outside the castle, especially in the twilight. So let’s stay overnight. The duke's suite and an evening feast in the castle restaurant are at your disposal.
